This past Saturday we had the honor of speaking with Johanna & Daniel Gomez, authors of The Adventures of a Military Brat series.
Daniel, a US Army Special Operations Officer and Combat veteran, and his wife Johanna, a licensed Mental Health Counselor, created The Adventures of a Military Brat to highlight the unique challenges that military children face. From frequent moves to the uncertainty of deployments, military children are continuously faced with difficult situations. Johanna and Daniel developed their stories in a way that turn these challenges into opportunities and show the young readers how resilient they truly.
Their first book, My Military Life, follows a young boy as he shares the challenges and opportunities of growing up as a military brat. He anticipates an upcoming move, adjusts to his father’s recent return, and makes new friends all while showing pride for military traditions and the unique culture of growing up as a military brat.
In The Big Move the reader rides along with a courageous young girl as she faces the challenges of a military family move. She says goodbye to friends, cherishes favorite memories, and prepares for her new home, all while delivering a touching message of hope and optimism.
A third story is in the works and will highlight children dealing the deployment of a loved one.
During our book talk we chat about the strength of military children, the difficult situations they endure at such young ages, and the importance of talking about and handling these situations in a positive way. Daniel and Johanna also walk us through both of their books and discuss the importance of the illustrations and stories they chose to present.
